Austin Trail of Lights 2026

Zilker again in December, and this time parking has to be bought in advance.

December 10-23, 20262100 Barton Springs Rd, Austin, TX 78746

The Trail runs nightly from December 10 through 23 at Zilker Park. Same park as ACL, entirely different problem. This crowd has strollers, grandparents, and a hard close at the end of the night.

The thing that catches people out is parking. Close-in parking at Zilker is pre-paid pass only, sold online in limited numbers, and not sold on site. Turning up hoping to pay at a gate does not work, because there is no gate to pay at.

Details below reflect the most recently published visitor guide. Ticketing and parking specifics shift a little year to year, so check the official guide before you go.

Getting there, and getting out

Parking is pre-paid or it does not exist

Close-in parking requires a pass bought in advance online, and the nightly allocation is limited. In recent years there have been two lots: the Zilker Tree lot on the polo field near the tree and the Grand and ZIP entrances, and an Austin High surface lot at 1715 W Cesar Chavez Street. Access has run roughly 5:30 to 10 p.m.

The Burger Center shuttle

A shuttle has run from Toney Burger Center on selected nights, with passes around ten dollars including general admission, and free parking on the south side of the Burger Center for shuttle riders. If you are a family of four and cost is the deciding factor, that is the sensible option and we will point you at it.

Why a drop-off beats both

A drop-off sidesteps the pass lottery entirely. You are not refreshing a parking page in November, you are not driving to a shuttle lot in south Austin first, and nobody walks back to a dark polo field at the end of a cold night with a sleeping four year old.

The free nights are the crowded nights

General admission has been free on a run of early nights each year. Those are the nights everyone goes, so the traffic on Barton Springs Road is heaviest exactly when admission costs nothing. If your schedule is flexible, a paid night is a calmer night.

Everyone leaves at the same time

The Trail closes at a fixed hour and the park empties in one wave, in December, in the cold. This is the same structural problem as ACL and it has the same answer: have the ride already arranged rather than opening an app in a crowd.

Book your Trail of Lights ride

Flat rates set when you book, so event-night surge pricing is not your problem. Scheduled pickups with a driver who already knows the closures.
